"Being mindful is taking control of what we focus our attention on in the present moment - whether is it an emotion, a thought, a belief, an impulse, a sensation, or something in our surrounding environment.  Being mindful is approaching that "thing" with a curious, open, and accepting attitude." ~www.ViAcharacter.org

“Mindfulness practice means that we commit fully in each moment to be present; inviting ourselves to interface in this moment with full awareness, with the intention to embody as best we can an orientation of calmness, mindfulness, and equanimity right here and right now.” ~Jon Kabat-Zinn

A Mindful Massage is not just a protocol massage or "standard" massage.  A Mindful Massage is when the practitioner is present and connected to the client.  It's about what the client wants AND what they need.  Paying close attention to how the client and their body is reacting to the techniques.  It's about the temperature of the room, the music, and not just needing to know how their body is but also about what is going in the clients' life; the different stresses, challenges, and what's going right.  That's right!  What is going right in a clients' life is just as important as what needs attention.

For the client: Is the pressure consistent? Are you enjoying the techniques being used? Are you able to relax (even through deep tissue)?  Is the therapist responding to your cues or are they open to feedback and responding to it?  Does it feel like a protocol or does it feel like it's being performed with care?
